In a recent article published by Bloomberg news, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co said he believes that Apple iPhone users unlocked more than one million devices in 2007 to allow them to use the iPhone on a different network. This means Apple is losing a significant amount of potential profits.
With approximately 3.75 million iPhones sold in 2007, that would represent around 27% of all iPhones sold last year, which is an "astounding" amount, according to Sacconaghi, who works at the firm and whose previous estimate was 750,000 iPhones. This is apparently causing a big headache at Apple, because unlocked iPhones "generate 50 percent less revenue and as much as 75 percent less profit" than those linked to service contracts, according to the analyst. He estimates that for every 1 million iPhones that users unlock, Apple is losing some $300-400 million in future profits with telephone operators like AT&T and O2 and it may make it more difficult to sign new deals with operators. |
