Well it had to happen sooner or later, especially after Apple slashed the price of the 8GB iPhone last year by $200 to $399 and discontinued the 4GB model after people complained it was overpriced, only a few months after launch.
Apple announced today that they are launching a new 16GB iPhone, doubling the capacity of the last remaining version of the iPhone available in the US. The new 16GB iPhone will retail at $499 (only $100 more than the 8GB model) and store around 3,500 songs. One thing's for sure, Apple are moving quickly to extend the range shortly after slashing the price on the 16GB iPhone in June last year and discontinuing the 4GB model in September. It seems people want more value for money from their iPhones. Simultaneously, Apple also announced a bigger 32GB version of the iPod Touch, also doubling up from 16GB. That means you can now fit around 7,000 songs on this version of the iPod Touch, retailing at the same price as the 16GB iPhone. It will be interesting to see whether people who already have a mobile phone but like the interface of the iPhone that is also featured on the iPod Touch, decide to upgrade from their old iPod. Given that Apple are pricing the iPod Touch at the same level as the iPhone for twice the memory capacity (8GB at $299, 16GB at $399 and now 32GB at $499), it would seem they're thinking along these lines as well. At this stage, we don't know when these new versions will be launched in Europe, but we assume it won't be long. In the meantime, you can check out the full story on Bloomberg.com. |
