In response to the flood of unsupported third-party applications created as soon as the Apple iPhone was launched, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced around October 2007 his intention to release a set of tools that would allow developers to build their own applications. Apple's first deadline for this Software Development Kit (SDK) was the end of February 2008.
According to an article on PC World (quoting BusinessWeek blogger Arik Hesseldahl), Apple's SDK may be delayed by as much as three weeks. Developers are eagerly anticipating the release of this toolkit as there is already a very active community building third-party applications for the iPhone using Safari. For many users, the iPhone will only show its true potential once applications can run on the device itself (rather than via Safari), directly interacting with the operating system. We'll have to wait and see what Apple produce, whether the SDK was worth the wait and if it will indeed mean a new exciting phase in the development of the iPhone, especially for business users. |
