Few consumer devices in recent years have spawned such a wide array of applications as the iPhone. Thanks to Apple's nascent and very popular app store, we're regularly seeing plenty of interesting new features brought to the iPhone. One new trend that seems to be taking off is to use the iPhone as a remote control to handle a range of things in your home. Anything from your home security system to your TV and lighting can now be controlled at the touch of a finger using your iPhone 3G.
A range of innovative companies like ILoveControl and Savant have developped specific apps for the iPhone to plug into their existing custom home installation software, with the aim of turning it into a universal remote control.
Want to turn down the sound on your surround system in your living room, or watch your favourite programme on TV? How about controlling the room temperature in your bedroom or locking your front door remotely if you forgot to do so on your way to work? You can now handle all these tasks directly from your iPhone 3G. We think these developments are only the beginning, but can already imagine some exciting applications for this type of software. You can read a short description of the main applications currently available for the iPhone on Wired.com's blog. |
