Is it the Oscar ceremony already? Has someone won the Euromillions lottery? Is Michael Jackson doing another comeback? Well, you would be forgiven for thinking so, given the sheer excitement in the crowd. No, you've guessed it, these are scenes of the official Apple iPhone launch on Regents Street in London last week.
Can this amount of applause ever be justified for a product launch? It seems that over the years the hype generated by the companies launching these products has snowballed into something pretty amazing. And big companies have perfected the art of making people believe they are truly privileged to be holding these new products in their hand - as if they just won a race. Let's not forget, although they may be some of the first to lay their hands on an iPhone, they did part with a considerable amount of money in the process and the price of the iPhone is likely to fall before long. Our advice: wait a bit, ignore the hype, and buy an iPhone when all the software fixes have taken place and the price has dropped a bit. Who knows, by then you could be looking at a 30GB iPhone instead of 8GB for a similar price! |
