The new Apple iPhone 4 is more beautiful, sleek and user-friendly than any of the previous models. Even more popular than its predecessors, iPhone 4 is the most on-demand gadget today and certainly a success story from Apple's point of view. Of course, it isn't perfect, and with TechRadar's help here's a brief look at what could help make the next iPhone even better.
Most of the problems identified early on with the iPhone 4 are relatively easy to fix, and the iOS4 provides a host of excellent new features. However, here are 10 top things Apple could consider to improve its number one selling gadget.
1. Resolve the reception issues once and for allThis is perhaps the most well-publicised problem with the iPhone 4. If you grip it the wrong way, reception suffers noticeably. To be precise, the problem seems to occur when bridging the gap between the external antenna and the bottom left of the iPhone. Although it isn't clear how much of a problem this is, it has been reported extensively by the media. While you can purchase a bumper to fix the problem, this is certainly at the top of the list of issues to be addressed by Apple with the iPhone 5. 2. Low storage capacityGiven the amount of features allowing you to add rich media to the iPhone, it is clear that the next generation of iPhones will need to have more storage to cope with the extra content. With better quality games, the ability to shoot HD videos, larger photos thanks to a better camera, active iPhone users will quickly find that the current storage capacity won't take them as far as they might want. With even more features, enhanced video recording and a better camera, the iPhone 5 will almost certainly need more storage capacity. 3. Better batteryIf you use your iPhone exclusively to make calls, you might find that the battery life is sufficient. However, once you start making use of the camera, video, play music or games, it will quickly die out. Either Apple need to improve the battery so it can cope with the extra use. Better still, if they can find a way to make it work esthetically, why not make the battery removable as well? 4. Improve the iPhone speakersThis is perhaps one of the aspects of the iPhone that let it down the most, given it's focus as a rich media and games device. While it's fine to use the headphones (which by the way could also be improved), it would be great to enjoy the iPhone with better quality speakers.
5. Ability to output HD videoWhile it's possible to record HD video with the iPhone 4, unfortunately the capacity to output HD content isn't available yet with the device - without using a PC or Mac.
6. Improved back-upsWhile iOS is certainly much better when it comes to playing games on the iPhone, unfortunately the back-up settings are somewhat inadequate. For instance, if you delete a game from your iPhone by mistake, you'll also lose all the associated data. That means all your progress in that game is gone. Ideally, the next version of iOS should offer a simple way to restore game settings when reinstalling an app. This doesn't just affect games, and could benefit other titles as well. What's more, Apple could investigate back-ups on a cloud basis to allow iOS to rely less heavily on iTunes. 7. Simplify file sharingAt present, email is the simplest way of sharing files with the iPhone. Some apps also allow file-sharing through a very small iTunes pane. This is one aspect of the iOS that could be improved, to make it easier to get content on and off your device.
8. Make the lock screen more usefulAt present, the iPhone's lock screen is designed mostly with minimalism in mind. You can define the background and it displays the date and time visibly enough. However, it would be helpful for iOS to allow you to customise what is shown on this screen, such as unread messages, recent email subjects, recent contacts and conversations, and upcoming calendar appointments.
9. A better way of blocking callsIt would be great to be able to screen calls more efficiently using the iPhone to 'block' undesirables. Apple already have a feature that's similar to this on the Mac OS X and may have something planned for the iPhone 5.
10. Biometric iPhone lockIt is already possible to lock your iPhone using a pass key, but using your finger would be even simpler. Apple apparently already have patents related to this feature, however they may be waiting for more affordable technology. This is certainly one feature users would enjoy using with the iPhone 5.
